B.B. King is the King of the Blues

Life journey

Recognized as the “King of the Blues”, B.B. King has long been among the most influential musicians in the world. The legendary performer’s name was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Born on a cotton plantation, at the height of his fame he gave hundreds of concerts a year. The record year for B.B. King was 1956, when the musician took the stage more than 340 times. B.B. King (B.B. King, real name – Riley B. King, Riley B. King) was born on September 16, 1925 in the American state of Mississippi. His mother abandoned her son when he was only four years old. His father then had to work very hard, so the upbringing of the child was mainly occupied by his grandmother. In his youth, BB sang in the church choir. The first guitar appeared at the boy about twelve years of age. In 1943, King, quitting his job as a tractor driver, decided to devote his life to creativity. Leaving Kilmichael, where his grandmother lived, he rushed to Memphis. However, in the state of Tennessee, the future star had a hard time. After a few months, unable to withstand the hardships, the guitarist returned home, where he continued to study music. A couple of years later, King’s talent was appreciated at a radio station in West Memphis, where he performed as a singer and disc jockey. It was there that the artist was nicknamed “Blues Boy” (Blues Boy), a shortened version of this stage name that would later become well known in the music world.

The breakthrough came in 1949, when King managed to record the first four tracks for Jim Bulleit’s Bullet Records. Then a contract was signed with the Los Angeles studio RPM. Compositions for it were produced by another relative of the musician – Sam Phillips, who at that time was actively cooperating with famous American bluesmen. During the 1950s, King’s fame only gained momentum. The musician quickly took a place among the most notable rhythm and blues musicians. The United States enthusiastically received compositions like You Know I Love You, Sneakin’ Around, Bad Luck and Please Accept My Love, as well as other B.B. King songs. Instead of $85, the artist was already earning $2,500 for the week.

In 1970, The Thrill Is Gone won a Grammy Award, and Rolling Stone magazine listed the song among the “greatest songs of all time”. Subsequently, the musician will receive the Grammy more than once. Different albums will receive the award, as well as B.B. King himself – for his “life achievements”. Yes, and the list of other awards, which during the creative path awarded to the performer, strikes the imagination with its length. B.B. King was officially married twice. However, neither Martha Lee Denton, nor Sue Carol Hall did not suit too tight schedules of performances of the famous spouse. According to the American press, the king of the blues had many novels. Different women gave birth to him at least fifteen children. Up until the early 2000s B.B. King actively toured. In 2004, having celebrated his 75th birthday, the musician announced that he would perform less often. However, despite the “Farewell Tour” through Europe in the summer of 2005, he returned there a year later. Performances continued in his native States as well. In the fall of 2014, B.B. King, who has lived over twenty years with type 2 diabetes, already seriously admitted that he stops concert activity. In the spring of 2015, the musician was urgently hospitalized due to a sharp deterioration of his condition. Despite all the efforts of doctors, the disease went too far… On May 14, 2015, B.B. King died in his own home in Las Vegas (USA) due to complications of diabetes. The artist was 89 years old.

Some quotes

The water from a black fountain tastes no worse than white water.
Many people believe what other people say.

If you can’t get your songs to people one way, you have to find another way.

When I was growing up, I was taught that a man must protect his family. When the wolf tries to come in, you have to stand in the doorway.

Blues was like the problem child that can be in a family. You’re a little embarrassed to show him to others, but you love him. You just don’t know how others will receive him.

Yes, I love women more than anything else in the world, but that doesn’t mean I want to sleep with them all. Let me explain. It’s like looking at a rose. A rose is a rose. It’s beautiful. But that doesn’t mean you have to pick it and put it on your lapel.

It seems like I’ve always had to work harder than other people. At night, when everyone else is asleep, I sit in my room and try to play scales.

I think I started liking the blues when I was about 6 or 7 years old. There was something about it because nobody else was playing that kind of music.

I tried to relate my voice to my guitar and my guitar to my voice. How they both speak to each other.

I don’t think anybody steals anything; we all borrow.

No one loves me except my mother, and maybe she’s cheating on me too.

The beautiful thing about teaching is that no one will take that away from you.
If there were no women, I wouldn’t want to be on this planet. Women, friends and music – without those three things I wouldn’t want to be here.

I never wanted to be like other blues singers. I could listen to them play, but I never wanted to be anything other than me. There are a few people that look like I wanted to play like, but when I tried, it didn’t work out.

I don’t have a favorite song of the ones I’ve written. But my favorite song is “Always On My Mind,” the Willie Nelson version. If I could sing it the way he did, I’d sing it every night. I love the story it tells.

I never use that word, retire.

When I am finally gone, I pray to God that it will happen in one of three ways. One, on stage or when I walk off stage, two, it’s in a dream. What’s the third? You’ll have to guess for yourself!

Mind-blowing double bass

The double bass (Italian contrabbasso or basso) is the largest in size (about two meters in height) and the lowest in sound of the widely used bowed string musical instruments, combining the features of the violin family and the viol family. It has four strings (less often three or five), tuned in fourths: E1, A1, D, G (E, A counter octave, D, G large octave), range from E1 (E counter octave) to g1 (G first octave) and higher .

Interesting Facts:

  • Many double bass players can play the electric bass guitar successfully.
The double bass was the most popular and most frequently used bass instrument in various groups in the 1950s, despite the fact that bass guitars and tubas had already appeared at that time.
  • In 1911, during a concert, one incident occurred: double bassist B. Jones’s bow broke, and without being confused, the musician continued to perform the piece with his fingers. This is how the audience heard for the first time the interesting sound of double bass pizzicato.
  • In 1615, at a festival in Dresden, a giant double bass, 4 meters high, was presented and played by a Polish musician. This instrument was called an octobass. One of these antique octobass, named “Goliath”, has been preserved and is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Its height is 2.6 meters and its width is just over a meter. In shape it is similar to viola da gamba, but only with wider sides.
  • Some octobass were so large that they had to be played by two players: one holding the strings and the other moving the bow.
  • In 1855, the French master J. Villaume demonstrated a three-string octobass at the Paris Exhibition. Today it is an exhibit at the Paris Conservatoire Museum. The height of this giant is 4 meters, it is controlled by a special lever-pedal mechanism. The musician against the backdrop of such an octobass looks like Gulliver in the land of giants. Such an instrument turned out to be impractical and only belongs in a museum.
  • The largest double bass is 5.55 m high and 2.13 m wide.
  • Due to its size, starting to learn this instrument as a child was very problematic, but now, with the advent of small-sized double basses, you can start getting acquainted with the instrument at the age of 6 or 7.
  • In the USA in the 30s of the last century, double basses were made of aluminum and were intended for playing in military bands.
  • The names of this instrument are in different languages: Italian – Contrabasso; French – Contrebasse, English – Double Bass, German – Kontrabass.
On March 10, 2011, a concert was held in Seoul (South Korea) in which 90 double bassists took part. Among the works, A. Dvořák’s symphony No. 9 “From the New World” was performed. All parts of violins, violas and cellos were performed on double basses. The concert was held under the leadership of the Korean Association of Double Bass Players.
  • Some manufacturers make instruments specifically for touring musicians. The double bass has a small body and a removable neck. This instrument does not lose its sound qualities and is very convenient for transportation.
Today, the cost of a double bass made from high-quality, seasoned material is approximately $24,000.

Design

Unlike the instruments of the violin family, the shape of the double bass was never completely standard. The evolution of this instrument resulted in several major variations in shape: viola da gamba, violin, busseto, guitar, and pear shape.

The double bass is made from several types of well-seasoned wood and its structure is the same as that of the instruments of the entire violin group: upper and lower soundboards, shell, headstock, resonator holes, loop, bow, neck, nut, headstock, pegs, pickguard, peg box, stand.

The double bass has thick strings, which are usually made of steel, catgut or synthetic materials, but with a mandatory copper or silver winding.

The double bass, like the violin, is played with a bow, although it has two varieties: the German system – short and heavy, and the French – long and thin, which is considered more maneuverable. The bow of a German design is held by the performer at the side, the thumb is on a wooden base. The French bow is held on top, and the thumb is held under the cane. Both bows are used by modern players, and the choice depends on personal preference.

The size of the double bass varies from the largest, 1.8 meters high, to the smallest, slightly larger than a cello. The height of the double bass can be slightly changed using the pin on which it rests.

In the 20-30s of the last century, the first electric double basses were designed, which are lightweight and easy to transport. The idea itself was not new: already in past centuries, some masters, as an experiment, made “dumb” double basses, the body of which was flat. With the advent of electronic sound reproduction, manufacturers had new opportunities, but it took a lot of time for craftsmen to bring the quality of the instrument to perfection.

Application and repertoire

The double bass is an obligatory member of symphony and chamber orchestras. This instrument was created specifically to double the bass line played by cellos in an orchestra and create a clear harmonic foundation, sound richness and rhythmic basis for a group of string instruments.

At first, the orchestra used only one double bass, but over time the number of instruments increased to eight.

The double bass has also found wide use in military bands and various concert groups around the world. It is very actively used in a number of genres such as jazz, blues, rock and roll, rockabilly, psychobilly, traditional country music, bluegrass, tango and many other types of popular and folk music. In a jazz big band, where there is a small composition of performers, this instrument is given very large opportunities for solo performance, for example, when constructing beautiful harmonic bass lines.

The emergence of modern new styles such as soul, fusion, funk and rock has contributed to a significant increase in technical capabilities, as double bass players love to conduct various experiments, including stylistic ones.

The double bass came onto the scene as a solo instrument at the end of the 18th century. The first performer who revealed the rich virtuoso-expressive and melodious capabilities of the double bass was the legendary D. Dragonetti – double bassist and composer. Later, his work was continued by P. Bottesini, F. Zimandl, and in the 20th century by A. Mishek, S. Koussevitzky, R. Brown, E. Mayer, N. Gorbunov, A. Cohen, V. Volkov, E. Kolosov, Ch. Mingus, L. Rakov and many others.

The repertoire for the double bass is extensive. Concert works for him were composed by I. Haydn, D. Dragonetti, P. Bottesini, K. Dittersdorf, S. Koussevitzky, I. Abert, R. Bennett, V. Bruns, A. Eshpai, D. Harbison, O. Yanchenko, N. Kapustin, E. Mayer others.

Joseph Haydn – österreichischer Komponist, Vertreter der Wiener Klassikschule

Lebensweg

Mai 1809 in Wien.

Eric Clapton – British rock musician, composer, guitarist and vocalist

Life path

Eric Clapton is one of the most famous and authoritative guitarists of our time, a performer whose work has become a school and a kind of standard for several generations of rock musicians. The guitarist himself always considered himself a blues musician. The patriarch of rock music, Clapton remains a significant creative force today. Eric Patrick Clapton was born on March 30, 1945 in the English town of Ripley. At the age of 14, he became seriously interested in the blues and began teaching himself to play the guitar. The first group where Clapton began to play as a professional guitarist was

«The Roosters»,

and then he went to «Casey Jones And The Engineers».

Both were popular among local teenagers. It was then that the guitarist earned himself the nickname “Slow Hand” for his manner of slowly and smoothly sliding his fingers along the strings, lengthening the tone. In 1963, Clapton was invited to join the Yardbirds, where he created a sensation with his blues-tinged rock. Here the guitarist first showed his talent to the general public.

In subsequent years, Eric worked in groups

«Bluesbreakers»,

«Cream»

and «Blind Faith», where his talent revealed itself even brighter, not only as a guitarist, but also as an improviser and generator of many ideas. Having released several albums with these bands and toured a lot, Clapton achieved worldwide recognition.

The next stage in his musical career was the work on his first solo record. Eric Clapton’s debut album was released in 1970.

Inspired by success, Clapton assembles a backing group, Derek & the Dominos, and records a very interesting album, Layla, for which the musician wrote several songs.

The beginning of the 1970s was one of the most difficult periods in Eric’s life. Problems in his personal life and musical squabbles led the musician to become addicted to drugs, which took him out of work for several years. It was only in 1973 that he returned to music. After a successful course of treatment, Clapton was completely rehabilitated, and in July 1974 he released his second solo album, 461 Ocean Boulevard, which topped the charts of the time in both the US and Britain.

In the 1970s and 80s, Eric worked actively, releasing several successful discs that proved Clapton’s growth as a musician. He ceases to be “just a guitarist” and becomes an author and singer, playing the guitar at the same time. Almost all of his albums received positive reviews from critics and sold in large quantities. The musician maintained his high status with frequent tours, performances at concerts, appearances on television and the release of videos. Clapton’s career continued to rise into the 1990s. During this period, he recorded good albums, constantly toured and wrote music for films. His album “Unplugged” gained especially great popularity, which turned out to be one of his most outstanding commercial achievements and one of the most successful albums in the entire history of the musician.

In the new millennium, the musician continues to create actively and successfully. During his long career, Clapton experimented with different styles, but the blues always remained his basis. A Grammy Award winner and Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Eric is the only musician to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times. He is also known as an active public figure – in 1997 he founded a charitable foundation to help treat alcohol and drug addiction. The patriarch of rock music, Eric Clapton, remains a significant creative force today as he continues his musical career.

Fryderyk Chopin – polski kompozytor i pianista

Wrażliwy i doświadczony pedagog zaszczepił w swoim uczniu miłość do muzyki klasycznej. Od 1831 roku Chopin mieszkał stale w Paryżu, zadziwiając go oryginalnymi mazurkami i polonezami – gatunkami odzwierciedlającymi słowiańskie rytmy taneczne i harmonię polskiego folkloru. Lata 1838-1846 to szczyt twórczości kompozytora. Chopina podziwiało wielu znanych artystów i pisarzy tamtych czasów: kompozytorzy Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, Adolf Meyerbeer, Ignaz Moscheles, Hector Berlioz, śpiewak Adolf Nourri, poeci Heinrich Heine i Adam Mickiewicz, artysta Eugene Delacroix, dziennikarz Agathon Giller i wielu Inny. Fryderyk Chopin zmarł 17 października 1849 roku w Paryżu, gdzie został pochowany na cmentarzu Père Lachaise. Serce kompozytora zgodnie z umierającą wolą przewieziono do Warszawy i zamurowano w jednej z kolumn kościoła Świętego Krzyża.
