About the stone

The amazing oligoclase stone is considered the most striking mineral in the feldspar family. Its unusual name was given by the famous German mineralogist August Breithaupt, who described it and 47 other minerals in 1826. And the first description of this stone dates back to 1824, when the chemist Jens Berzelius discovered this gem.

Mining locations

This mineral is often found in the form of inclusions in crystalline schists, granites, pegmatites and other rocks.


Oligoclase is most often found in Norway. This stone, found here, is more suitable than others for jewelry and ornaments. It is also mined in Tajikistan, Canada, the USA and Africa.

Mineral composition

Oligoclase or sunstone, as it was called by the peoples of ancient India, Greece and the Indians of Canada, is a mineral consisting of soda, silica and alumina. A type of feldspar, its luster is due to the inclusion of hematite and goethite particles.


In composition, oligoclase is close to albite. But in comparison, oligoclase does not split along certain crystallographic directions and does not form smooth parallel surfaces.


The formation of the stone occurs due to layers of translucent plate-like crystals that have a white, yellow or blue tint. The plates give off a rainbow glow due to light interference.

Application area

Oligoclase is a fairly rare type of mineral, so it is not used in industry. Its main use is jewelry and crafts. Decorative stones are ground for beads. For crafts, pegmatite is most often used, in which oligoclase forms large blocks. To ensure the integrity of the mineral, its extraction and primary processing are carried out manually.
